FBB Member, PhD Student, Attacking Midfielder
“Through my time with FBB, I have learnt that no matter how tough or impossible an idea or concept can be, through dedication, perseverance, hard work, team-work and resolution based on firm values and principles, that idea can be transformed into a long-standing legacy and philosophy.”
Omar joined Football Beyond Borders in 2010 while studying at SOAS University. He was the first person in his family to go to university. Omar was studying International Studies and Diplomacy and was searching for a way to combine his Islamic faith with his passion for football to create a more harmonious society. Omar took part in the FBB tour of Egypt and Palestine in 2011 and says that this taught him that we can achieve anything, no matter how tough, through dedication, team-work and staying true to our principles.
The Middle East tour was the springboard for Omar to shape a career for himself where he works to break down barriers between Muslims and people from different backgrounds. He founded the organisation, Ramadan Tent, which extends the Muslim practice of breaking fast to homeless groups across London. The aim of the organisation is to challenge some of the misconceptions people have about Islam and connect with different communities on a more humanistic level. He is also studying for a PhD in Sport and Diplomacy at SOAS University.
He continues to volunteer with FBB and provided his expertise for the fundraising and project management of the London International Tournament and the Brazil and Bosnia tours.
